He was named after a Philadepelphia doctor who taught Gen Hood's father medicine in the 1820s. The doctor's name was Dr. John Bell.

Am curious where John Hood had gotten the middle name Bell.
Was that a surname of one of his ancestors?
Yours,
Carol Bell Chambers

The author, Ida Richardson Hood, was Gen. Hood's daughter. She was a professional librarian and a fierce defender of her father. She lived in New Orleans until her death in the early 1960s.

General John Bell Hood was a man accomplished in leading smaller groups of soliders in actions against the enemy. His many battlefield wounds from the Indians and the Civil war left no doubt of his courage. He was an achiever who out paced his own abilities. The later disasters against Sherman and the sucicidal folly at Franklin Tennessee told the story of a sucessful comander of smaller units of men and a disaster at commanding larger bodies of men at arms. He appeared to not know his limitations, but how many of us in this world do?....Louie Orduna
