I can anticipiate no greater calamity for the country than a dissolution of the Union. – Robert E. Lee

“As an American citizen, I take great pride in my country, her prosperity annd institutions, and would defend any State if her rights were invaded. But I can anticipiate no greater calamity for the country than a dissolution of the Union. It would be an accumulation of all the evils we complain of, and I am willing to sacrifice everything but honor for its preservation.”Robert E. Lee, January 23, 1861 (in a letter to his son Custis)
When Lee wrote this, six southern States had already seceded.

  1. Im not sure what you think this proves. Lee also wrote that God intended slavery to be cruel and painful, as way to teach slaves their place.

He also kept a “hunting list” in his own handwriting, in his account books, of slave women he most wanted captured. Lee regularly sold slave infants of his slave women — and virtually every slave detested him. In fact, almost all his slaves rebelled and ran away before the Civil War. Lee was obsessed with getting them back, particularly specific women who had very light skinned children.

When Lee managed to catch one woman, he had her stripped, and screamed at her while he had her tortured. That was Robert E Lee.

The truth about Lee is far far different than what the South has tried to pretend. In fact, every Southern leader was guilty of horrible cruelty and violence, and terror, against women and children. This has been covered up by the South and its apologist. Lee was especially cruel, even by the standards of his day.

Lee inherited about 80 slaves which he was supposed to free. Instead, he kept them for 5 years, sold their infants, whipped them for running away, and tried repeatedly to sell them, contrary to the will. He was turned down by the VA court repeated — during the Civil War – in his attempts to sell these slaves.

Lee used terror to try to control the slaves — he had a whipping post installed, and paid handsomely for men to whip slaves while he watched and screamed. Lee was virtually a lunatic, but with good manners around whites.
